Pre-Emergent: Your First and Best Line of Defense Against Crabgrass
Pre-emergent is the number one line of defense against crabgrass. It should be applied as soil temperatures approach 55°F (13°C)—not when they’ve already reached the mid-60s. As temperatures trend upward, the goal is to have the protective barrier in place before germination begins. There’s very little downside to applying slightly early, but being too late can render the treatment largely ineffective.
This year, soil temperatures spiked unusually early before settling back into a more typical pattern. As a result, we applied our first two rounds of treatment closer together than usual. While back-to-back applications can sometimes raise concerns—particularly when fertilizer is involved—there’s no risk in this case because each round serves a completely different purpose. One establishes the pre-emergent barrier, while the other supports turf health.
While post-emergent crabgrass control options do exist, they are more costly and require patience. Most effective treatments need two to three applications, and some products temporarily turn the crabgrass a stark bleach white during the process—something most homeowners would rather avoid.
Granular vs. Liquid Pre-Emergent
Both granular and liquid pre-emergent applications are effective, but each comes with its own advantages:
Granular Pre-Emergent
- Can include fertilizer, providing a dual-purpose application
- Easy to apply and commonly used in residential settings
- May result in less uniform coverage, especially in tight corners and along edges
Liquid Pre-Emergent
- Typically does not contain fertilizer unless specifically added
- Provides more precise and even coverage across the lawn
- Ideal for targeting edges, corners, and hard-to-reach areas
The Bottom Line
Timing is everything when it comes to crabgrass prevention. Applying pre-emergent as soil temperatures approach 55°F ensures your lawn is protected before weeds have a chance to establish. With the right timing and application method, you can avoid the hassle and expense of post-emergent treatments and enjoy a cleaner, healthier lawn all season long.
